As the August sun sets and the summer season draws to a close, Oregon unveils its hidden gem—the enchanting “second summer.”
Enjoy the beach with fewer crowds and leisurely temperatures when you visit Hallmark Resort in September. Even as fall begins on the coast, the reasons for visiting the beach multiply when you don’t have to share your favorite spot with the rest of Oregon’s residents. Get a glimpse into all of the activities this fall below:
Hiking
Use the cooler air and uncrowded highways to finally hit that scenic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway you’ve been dreaming of. Build your perfect vacation in the beautiful natural landscape and discover two of our favorite hikes: here.
Crabbing
Welcome to “The Dungeness Crab Capital of the World.” Try something new and catch your own meal this fall when the best quality crabs can be found in Yaquina Bay. We promise it is easier than it looks, as while visiting the Newport Public Fishing Pier next to Rogue Brewers on the Bay, one of our favorite Instagramable spots in Newport, we watched crabbers haul in dinner all within a span of an hour. Plus, after crabbing, you can grab a cold one at Rogue’s World Headquarters right next door. Check out a map of all the crabbing spots: here. Learn everything you need to know about crabbing in our Oregon Coast Crabbing 101 blog.
Oregon Coast Aquarium
Come to the coast and meet the local residents! From sea otters to moon jellies, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is full of the wonderful neighbors we have at Hallmark Resort. Only a 4-minute drive or a 1.4-mile walk away, the aquarium is open every day of the year except December 25th. Spark your learning with this living classroom right on the Pacific Oregon and watch otter pups get fed and touch an octopus in an animal encounter! This is the perfect rainy-day activity that promises to make a splash with the whole family. Explore the live cameras to get a sneak peek of the wonders that await you.
Farmers Market
Discover the local produce and find one-of-a-kind gifts, for that impossible-to-buy-for family member who claims your handmade “gifts” don’t cut it. Only a three-minute drive or 15-minute walk from Hallmark at the intersection of Hwy 101 and Angle Street, discover the Newport Farmers Market every Saturday from March to December, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. It’s a perfect start to your Saturday on the Oregon coast. Find everything from hand-crafted jewelry to fresh fruit, and catch some local musicians, all while supporting our coastal community.
Whale Watching
Whale, whale – whale watching season is upon us! Through October, you can see the Resident Grey whales come near the shores to feed. Visit the whale-watching center for sight-seeing opportunities right on the shore or to get on a first-name basis with Newport’s largest residents, you can book a tour with Marine Discovery Tour.
Comfort Food and Local Cuisine
As the weather turns cooler, treat yourself to some comforting and delicious food. From clam chowder to steaks, experience the flavors of the coast at our very own Georgie’s just steps from Hallmark or discover Pacifc Kitchen’s tasty seafare.
Oregon Coast Jazz Party
October 6th – 8th
Join us on the beautiful shores of Nye Beach for a party you won’t want to miss where the vibrant sounds of blues will merge with the ocean blue. Get entranced by the live music only a short 4 minute drive or 20 minute walk from Hallmark Resort Newport.
Newports’ Historic Bayfront
The bayfront is chock full of vibrant shopping spots so you can do all your holiday shopping and find hand-crafted goods while strolling the bay. Walk the historic Bayfront and buy live seafood right off the docks with the boats touting their catch of the day and sea lions circling in the waters below. Grab a treat at one of the many cafés and restaurants bordering the waterfront.
