This month: April 9th: Marine Science Day at the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center. Join the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) in Newport for our annual Marine Science Day, from 10am to 4pm! Meet researchers from Oregon State University and six government agency partners. Explore with interactive science displays and touch tanks presented by marine scientists. Visit a genetics lab. Enjoy special family-friendly activities by Oregon Sea Grant and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. April 22nd: Earth Day! The theme in 2016 is planting trees. Over the next five years, as Earth Day moves closer to its 50th anniversary, they’re calling on you to help achieve one of their most ambitious goals yet — planting 7.8 billion trees and they are starting now. Trees will be the first of five major goals they are undertaking in honor of the five-year countdown to the 50th anniversary. On their own and together, these initiatives will make a significant and measurable impact on the Earth and will serve as the foundation of a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable planet for all. Newport, Oregon in March Spring is here and that means longer days, flowers blooming, brighter sunsets, whale watching, and Spring Break! Find out what is going on this month in Newport, Oregon and make your plans to visit us! Nye Beach Mystery Weekend – March 12th 9am This is a family friendly event where participants visit local business locations to collect clues and interrogate suspects to solve this “Who Dun It!” This year “Washed Up! The Story of a Hollywood Starlet,” takes place in 1961. Suspects dress in period clothes as do many of our sleuths. Packets are available for purchase from 9am until noon on Saturday, March 12. Participants collect clues starting at 10am and suspects are available for interrogation after 11:30am on March 12th. Signs will direct you to the starting point at Nye Cottage located at 208 NW Coast Street. The Reveal is held at the American Legion (just follow the signs) at 7pm, following a silent auction. Spring Whale Watching Week – March 19th – 26th  Whale watching takes place almost year-round on the Oregon Coast. The whales migrate past on their way to and from the waters off Alaska and Mexico. We watch whales in the winter from mid-December through January. Spring watching begins in March with the peak near the end of the month and finishes in June with mothers and babies traveling north. 11th Annual Port of Toledo Wooden Boat Show – August 15th, 2015 Toledo is a city located on the Yaquina River and along U.S. Route 20 in Lincoln County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. This free, family-friendly, weekend event celebrates the historic traditions of wooden boats, and recreation along the Yaquina River. Wooden boats from throughout the northwest are on display ranging from kayaks and canoes to work boats and pleasure craft.
