It attracts about ten thousand people, and it has some very unique aspects. Newport, on the central Oregon coast, has a Fourth of July celebration that not only but stunning but surprising. First and foremost: the surrounding hills of Yaquina Bay create an unusual effect where the sound bounces and careens around the area, tripling or quadrupling the booming noises from the mortars. Look for about 1100 explosions this year, according to volunteers putting on the show. The fireworks begin at dusk! Published on May 31, 2016There’s always something special happening in Newport – here are some of the premier annual events that help make our town such a vibrant place to live and a desirable travel destination! Check out our upcoming events to see what’s happening in and around Newport this month. June 4th – Newport Marathon & Half Marathon Starting in Yaquina Bay State Park at the historic “haunted” lighthouse, runners will head north along the ocean through some of Newport’s picturesque neighborhoods. This loop through the city is primarily residential with a few short gentle hills and turns at street corners. Heading back through the starting area, runners will proceed downhill under the Yaquina Bay Bridge to the bayfront. Past shops, restaurants, galleries and a large fishing village, the course continues along the bay. Just past mile four, there is a short hill that rises about 40 feet then gently descends back to bay level where it continues for the remainder of the race. The course follows the Yaquina Bay and River estuary to mile 15 where it turns back toward town, retracing the same route. The gentle hill at mile four reappears at mile 26, and it’s downhill from there to the finish. Business After Hours – June 16, 2016 Annual Awards Banquet – June 24, 2016 Newport’s Amazing Race – July 30, 2016 Don’t miss the amazing summer weather, perfect for dogs running on the beach, wine on your oceanfront balcony, and bonfires with S’mores!
